The open bottom is the important part: roots grow straight down into the ground beneath, so plants draw water and nutrients from the soil rather than being confined to whatever compost fits in a container, and water drains away instead of collecting at the base and rotting the roots. Panels 30.5cm tall give enough depth for root vegetables as well as bedding and flowers, and the walls protect young plants from being trodden on or knocked. Powder-coated steel adds strength and resists rust, so it holds its shape for years outdoors without the rotting, warping or annual treating that timber beds need.
